Highlight of the tour:
- Doc Mieu Base: There’s basically nothing left of this old American base save a rusting tank and a sign. Apparently this once formed the backbone of the “eagle eyes of america” electronic monitoring fence.
- Ben Hai River & Hien Luong Brigde (17th parallel):
+ Ben Hai is a river which became an important landmark in the partition of the country into a northern and a southern zone along the 17th parallel by the Geneva Accords of 1954. The demilitarized zone (DMZ) separating the two parts extended about 5 kilometers (3.1 mi) from either side of the river.
+ Hien Luong Bridge is 178 m long but it took 21 years for Vietnamese people from the north and the south to be united. The bridge is witness to the Vietnamese people’s fierce but glorious struggle and a reflection of their desire for and belief in victory.
- Vinh Moc Tunnel – village undergound: Is a tunnel complex in Quang Tri, Vietnam. During the Vietnam War it was strategically located on the border of North Vietnam and South Vietnam. The tunnels were built to shelter people from the intense bombing of Son Trung and Son Ha communes in Vinh Linh county of Quang Tri Province in the Vietnamese Demilitarized Zone. It was constructed in several stages beginning in 1966 and used until early 1972.
- Cua Tung Beach: It is located in Vinh Linh District, Quang Tri Province. Although Cua Tung Beach is not very wide or long, it has its own beauty. The beach has sparkling green water, silky sand, and it is touched by soft breezes throughout the year.
OPTION 2: FULL DAY TOUR (HUE – VINH MOC TUNNEL – KHE SANH – HUE)
This option will take about 8 – 9 hours, please make sure to depart before 8.30 AM. We will do the highway 1 as mentioned in option 1 then go along highway 9 to the west of Quang Tri Province to explore other places as below.
- The Rockpile: The Hill was a Marine outpost built on top of a huge outcropping. Though it’s inaccessible, it’s a prominent sight from the highway.
- Dak Rong Bridge – Ho Chi Minh Trail: It is midway along Highway 9 and is the starting point of Highway 15, one of the main branches of the Ho Chi Minh Trail, which leads south to the A Shau valley and the infamous “Hamburger Hill”. Though not entirely legitimate, there is a monument commemorating it as a point on the Ho Chi Minh Trail, (called “Đường Trường Sơn” in Vietnam).
- Khe Sanh Combat Base – Ta Con airport: It is located near Lao border that was the site of a U.S. base which fell under attack in early 1968. The attack of the NVA on Khe Sanh was a diversion for the 1968 Tet Offensive in the south. The old airfield of red dirt still remains.
